Once primarily considered the gold standard treatment for PTSD and single traumatic events, EMDR is now recognised as an effective treatment for other psychological conditions such as complex trauma, depression, anxiety, phobias, OCD and addictions.
EMDR therapy works by taxing the working memory, often through bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, etc), while keeping in conscious awareness a past traumatic event.
The process allows the brain to kick start its own healing process, resulting in a "fading" of the targeted memory.
During the session, the negative core belief that was unconsciously generated at the time of the traumatic event is also processed and a new, adaptive/positive core belief chosen by the client is integrated (for example, the belief "I am bad" could be replaced with the though "I am good enough").
EMDR is not hypnosis; the client is always consciously and actively engaged in the process. The number of sessions required for the desired outcome varies depending on each personal presentation.
EMDR is different from traditional talking therapy, often offering a faster and more powerful outcome. Its efficacy is backed by years of research, and further applications are currently being explored.
