How about the Medicare Rebate?
The Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia is currently engaged with the House of Representative Committee to enable Counsellors and Psychotherapists to offer a Medicare rebate. At present, it is only registered psychologists that can offer a Mental Health Care Plan and a rebate. However, a psychologist’s fee often ranges between $210 and $310 per session, resulting in a significant out-of-pocket expense for the client for the duration of the Care Plan, and involving a much higher investment once the maximum annual number of sessions -usually 10- is reached.
Interestingly, a study was conducted in 2019 which considered 60,000 hours of counselling provided through contracted EAP services to over 1000 companies. Counsellors rated higher than both psychologists and social workers in clients’ ratings for rapport and understanding, and lowest of the three professions for complaints per service hours. Counsellors rated higher than psychologists for help with the clients’ issues, with 81% of clients giving counsellors a 4 or 5 star rating compared with 75% for psychologists.
